Nicknamed the secret islands of Sardinia, La Maddalena lends its name to an archipelago of around 60 isles and islands on the northeast coast. The island of the same name is the only permanently inhabited island in this collection. The national park is famous for its photogenic beaches and translucent seas, with Octopus Head Beach being one such example. You will want to pull out your snorkel and plunge in to see what sits beneath the blue. The best beaches include Bassa Trinità, Cala Francese, and Spiaggia di Monte di Rena, but truly, any beach you choose is bound to be bliss. Charter guests can also explore the town of La Maddalena for a charming stroll through the narrow streets.
The fourth largest island in the La Maddalena Archipelago, Santo Stefano, was known for hosting US and NATO naval bases but has been in peace since 2008. With no cars on the island and only accessible by boat, charter guests can enjoy the lack of tourist crowds as they explore this wild and rugged natural beauty. The natural environment is all white granite rocks dotted with Mediterranean vegetation, blue waters, and hiking trails that branch off and take you on a journey. With abandoned military constructions and remnants of the Neolithic period, Santo Stefano is a trip back in time.
A little beach resort adjacent to the ever-exclusive Costa Smeralda, Palau, offers first-class views of the enchanting Maddalena Archipelago National Park. Active charter guests can grab their hiking shoes and clamber up Bear's Rock for impressive angles over the archipelago. Despite being small, it has a lively vibe and comes etched with bars, restaurants, and boutiques. With impressive rock formations, Roccia dell’Orso is well worth a visit to see how time and the hands of weather have shaped the coastline.
A dazzling delight on the northern Sardinian coast, the Isola Santa Maria is the poster child of paradise. Bleached white sands meet milky blue, sapphire, and tantalizing turquoise shades on the soft whispers of a shoreline. While it’s a popular spot with day trippers and visitors, you are sure to find the warm waters a delight for snorkelling and swimming before climbing back aboard your yacht for a lazy sunlit lunch on deck. Active charter guests can take a stretching stroll to the nearby lighthouse or explore further the National Marine Park of La Maddalena. The National Marine Park stretches for more than 20,000 hectares across the sea and swallows 60 islands in its wake. It’s a whirlwind of remote shoes, pink sands, and sublime dive sites. Flocking with wild birds and sea turtles, this is one of the most evocative archipelagos in the Med and Santa Maria is no exception.
On stunning white, limestone cliffs at the south end of Corsica lies the spectacular harbour town of Bonifacio. The old citadel, perched on the precipice, rises high above the sea, overlooking the natural harbour below, that has sheltered many boats of the centuries and is now a modern marina. Steeped in history, there are plenty of sights to explore along the cobblestone streets of the old town, along with its fabulous viewpoints along the ramparts. Some of the medieval townhouses that dominate these cliffs are a few stories high, but only one room deep. Worth a visit is the beautiful maritime cemetery and the old convent of St Francois. On a clear day, from the Esplanade St Francois, you can see right across the bay to Sardinia.
